Mostly drone chords and improv walking harmonies, but play the occasional tune on it. Da Slockit Light in C, starting on the bottom string, is really fun, for example. Some tunes I play in their right key an octave down, and with time will become solid enough in my shifting to play them in their right octave. Still working on that part.

The Minstrel Boy can be played all in third pos, with some open D notes happening. It's a lot of fun, just do it! I want to be a musician when I grow up. Sorry, son, you can't do both. Transport: Yeah, that's one way to do it, I expect that sounds interesting. I've played 15" 5 string violas, and the E string has worked pretty well - maybe a bit more mellow and smoother than most violin E's? I know several Scottish fiddlers who use viola to good effect, although none who play it as their main instrument.

The limited amount of playing I've done on a borrowed viola has me intrigued by the possibilities, although the longer scale length and different response of the strings feels a little awkward initially after the violin. At any rate I've been thinking about getting a viola myself but expect I wouldn't use it as my main instrument. I've also been considering a 5-string which I think would probably be more versatile--but I wonder if it's a compromise tonally?

At any rate Beerbane, I agree with the other posters; I'd give it a shot. Most of my E tunes are over in Em anyway. Seems the one baliwick besides just finding one is the case. Should you not be sure to get a weapon with a matching case? Member Posts: 2, Gender: God gave me a fiddle and told me to play Total Badges: 29 Badges: View All. Quote from: madmat on Jul 14, , AM. Five Strings are Better than Four! Playing in the same key as the fiddler s is a fine thing, in my opinion. This morning I've been fooling around with Whiskey Before Breakfast in D on the viola, finding that the A coarse part works entirely in 1st position, and the B fine part works in 1st and 3rd, or 1st and 4th.

Trying to get it going both ways, so if I get lost somewhere in the middle I'll be on familiar ground wherever I wind up. Fiddlers on the other hand, bring their own interpretation to every piece, sometimes varying so far from the original melody, as to make it almost unrecognizable.

This cannot be interpreted to indicate either style of play derives any less intensity or greatness from the talent of the performers, indeed, both violin and fiddle style benefit greatly from the talent of the performer. Some untrained fiddlers may not hold the instrument firmly between the chin and shoulder, and instead rest the instrument on their chest.

This greatly reduces the playability of the instrument and is never seen in violin performance. The violin almost always appears in orchestral, symphonic or chamber settings with other violins, violas, cellos, and double basses or symphonic horns. The fiddle, on the other hand, may be accompanied by a wide range of instruments, including mandolin, guitar, drums, mountain dulcimer, banjo, and electronic keyboard. Bowed string instruments are among the most difficult instruments to learn because the tone quality will degrade quickly in unpracticed hands.

While it may be said that violinist have a higher need for professional training due to the exacting nature of excellent performance, this cannot, by any means, be interpreted to infer that the either style is more or less difficult to play. Both a fiddle and a violin are alike in physical appearance. Indeed, the exact same instrument may be played as a violin or fiddle, it is almost completely an issue of style and intent. A very recent development in modern instruments is the introduction of the 5-string Fiddle.

It includes a lower 5th Viola C-String, left and below the G string. This change has not been reproduced for the violin. Another common difference may be the preference of synthetic polymer strings by most classical violinists, whereas some fiddle players like the newer steel core strings for the sharper, crisper sound.

When I perform for social occasions like weddings, I play several tunes that are hard to fit tight into either the violin or the fiddle category. Setting it this way gives easy access to plenty of double-stops using open strings for a big, bold sound, heightening the anticipation among the assembled guests.

He was a Mexican violinista born into a poor Otomi Indian family of musicians. After moving to Mexico City, Rosas achieved great success in his short life he died at 26 as a composer of salon music for the aristocracy. His works included this piece in the style of the Viennese waltzes that were all the rage at the time.

The order on the violin from lowest to highest is G, D, A, E, but viola strings begin an interval of a 4th lower down, starting instead on C. So how do these differences affect the sound? Well, firstly the viola can go lower, making it better suited to playing music in lower registers. This is why viola players read music in the alto clef rather than the treble clef that violin players use , and sit right in the centre of an orchestra in between the cellos and violins.
